ISHIGAKI / THE GATEWAY
Stepping off the plane, a Yaeyama journey is only half begun. Taketomi, Iriomote, Hateruma — all are reached by boat from Ishigaki's port. This is not an introduction to a destination; it is a small guide to using Ishigaki, quietly, as the gateway to the journey.
AIR TO SEA
On Ishigaki, the vehicle of the journey changes from plane to boat. The airport and the port are in different places, and island time has already begun in between. Knowing the shape keeps the first day from getting lost.
After landing at New Ishigaki Airport, you move to the boat harbour. The airport and the island-ferry terminal are apart, linked by bus, taxi and so on. The time it takes varies with the road and the service, so no numbers are written here — confirm the transfer with the guidance on the day.
The main routes to the Yaeyama islands depart from Ishigaki's island-ferry terminal. For tickets and for checking the day's sailings, go by the operators' counters and official guidance. On whether the boats run, the operator's same-day information is the most reliable.
Give your connections some slack. Planes can run late, and on rough days boats can be cancelled. In Yaeyama, an unhurried plan is itself the best piece of equipment you can carry.
THE NIGHT BEFORE, THE NIGHT AFTER
The largest choice in how you use Ishigaki is where you place the nights: the night before you cross, and the night after you return. Where you sleep changes the breathing of the trip.
On a day with an early boat, spending the previous night on Ishigaki lets the morning begin quietly. Especially on days you cross to the longer routes — Hateruma, Iriomote — a stay the night before softens the journey.
The day's last boat decides the shape of the return. Spend that night on Ishigaki and the next day's flight need not be hurried; the journey closes still on island time. Its time varies by island and season — always confirm it on the day.
