Broom strokes left in the white sand are the sign that someone tended this lane that very morning. Before the visitors arrive, the island’s day has already begun. To walk these lanes is to be allowed to walk upon that care.

The low coral stone walls soften the wind and gently mark out each plot. The gardens and verandas you glimpse over them belong to someone’s everyday life. Do not enter, do not peer in — a greeting from the lane is the most comfortable distance.

Houses aligned in height and material are no accident: they are the result of an island community protecting this landscape together. HOSHINOYA Taketomi states officially that it was built in keeping with the island’s traditional architectural standards and culture.

The crossing from Ishigaki Port to Taketomi Port takes about 10 minutes. Schedules and frequencies change, so check the day’s service information for both directions.
