Days go to the lagoon; at night you walk the wide grounds and close the day beneath a southern island’s starry sky. A proposal for a stay that gives the night the leading role, inspired by Haimurubushi — an inn named for the Southern Cross, “the stars clustered in the south”.
A PROPOSAL BUILT AROUND THE NIGHT
Yaeyama journeys are usually told through the daytime sea, but only those who stay hold the hours of night. This inn’s name, in the Yaeyama language, is hai-muru-bushi — “the stars clustered in the south”, the Southern Cross. The name itself gives the night permission to play the leading role. With soft materials — starlight, night wind, a garden of few lamps — this proposal places Kohama’s night at the centre of the stay.
01 / THE NAME
Haimurubushi — hai (south), muru (cluster), bushi (stars). In the Yaeyama language, the stars clustered in the south. The name of this inn — which calls itself Japan’s southernmost island beach resort — is the Southern Cross, hanging low in the southern sky. The heart of the stay was decided by the name long ago.
