YAEYAMA / HATOMA ISLAND

The island wherea song was born.

The smallest inhabited island of the Yaeyama Islands — 0.96 km², about 3.9 km around, about 50 people (Taketomi Town). “Hatoma-bushi”, a folk song representative of Yaeyama, was born here. About 45–55 minutes by direct boat from Ishigaki Port; sailings via Uehara on Iriomote can take more than 70 minutes.

THE SMALLEST INHABITED ISLAND OF YAEYAMA

The smallest inhabited
island of Yaeyama.

Hatoma belongs to Taketomi Town, Okinawa, in the sea north of Iriomote Island. In the town's official description, this is the town's northern end. About 3.9 km around and 0.96 km² in area, with a population of about 50 (Taketomi Town; Okinawa Prefecture). It is the smallest inhabited island of the Yaeyama Islands, and moving around it is mainly on foot (Taketomi Town Tourism Association).

This page walks what is worth knowing before you cross — the island as the birthplace of “Hatoma-bushi”, Hatoma-Nakamori and its white lighthouse, the beaches and the sea, the village and its rites, and the readiness an island with no shops asks of you. Sailings are few, and they are cancelled together with the Uehara route. That structure comes first.

01 / HATOMA-BUSHI

Where the song
comes from.

“Hatoma-bushi”, a folk song representative of Yaeyama, was born on this island (Taketomi Town). Climb Hatoma-Nakamori, the hill the song sings of, and Iriomote Island spreads wide before you (Taketomi Town). The Hatoma Island Music Festival, which began in the yard of a private home, has been held around early May — the 28th edition, in 2025, was organized by the festival's own committee (Taketomi Town). For the next edition and its date, go only by official announcements.

02 / NAKAMORI & LIGHTHOUSE

A white lighthouse

The island's highest point is Hatoma-Nakamori (33.8 m per the Taketomi Town Tourism Association). Thick with kuba palms, the hill is a town-designated natural monument and — as remains of the watch stations the Ryukyu court placed from 1644 — a component of the national historic site “Sakishima Islands Hibanmuri” (Taketomi Town; Agency for Cultural Affairs). Near the top stands the Hatoma Island Lighthouse, built in 1948, with a lookout platform beside it commanding a sweeping view of Iriomote (tourism association).

03 / BEACHES & THE SEA

On the west beach,
the sun goes down.

On the island's west lies Yarahama, wide and shallow — a sunset spot reached from the port on foot or by rental bicycle (tourism association). In front of the village, Mae-no-hama lies calm inside its breakwater; off the north coast there is a community of blue coral (tourism association). The island is part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, and with its incorporation in 2012 the surrounding sea gained the “Hatoma Island Barasu / Unarizaki” marine park zone (Ministry of the Environment). Sunsets cannot be promised — but the west-facing beach is always there.

04 / VILLAGE & RITES

Through the village,
around the island.

Around the port, a traditional village of fukugi trees and stone walls remains, and you can stroll it on foot (tourism association). In the sixth month of the lunar calendar comes the harvest festival (Taketomi Town); Kamurama, the deity of descendants' prosperity who appears in it, is introduced as seen only on Hatoma (tourism association). The island is about 3.9 km around, and moving through it is mainly on foot (tourism association) — circling the small island slowly is how this island is spent.

BEFORE YOU CROSS

The boats, and readiness for cancellations.

The regular ferry from Ishigaki began in April 2006 (Taketomi Town). About 45–55 minutes direct, about 70–80 minutes via Uehara on Iriomote (Anei Kanko) — a Hatoma day is built from the boat times.

02 / ROUTE

Cancelled together with Uehara

The Hatoma route runs as a via-stop of the Uehara route on Iriomote: when the Uehara route is cancelled, boats to Hatoma are cancelled too (Anei Kanko). And it is a route that crosses open sea (Anei Kanko) — how cancellations chain in the season of north winds is explained on “Wind & typhoons”.

03 / UEHARA

From Iriomote, 10–15 minutes

Between Uehara Port on Iriomote and Hatoma it is 10–15 minutes each way (Yaeyama Kanko Ferry). One way to build the trip is together with Iriomote. Check the timetable first, through to the boat back.

ISLAND TIME

The boats decide how
long a day trip is.

On an island with few sailings, the length of a day trip hangs on the boat times — this is not a quotation but this page's editorial reading of the via-stop structure. Climb to Nakamori and the lighthouse, walk through the village, out to Yarahama in the west. An island of about 3.9 km around can be walked without hurrying (tourism association). If you stay the night, pack one resolve: an extra night when the sea turns rough — that, too, is this page's reading.

TRAVEL READINESS

There are no shops.
That, too, is this island.

“There are no shops, so prepare food and drink before boarding the boat” — that is how the Taketomi Town Tourism Association introduces walking Hatoma. Check in advance whether the island's eateries are open, and confirm inn meals (full board? lunch?) when you book (tourism association). Carry extra cash, and buy your food and drink at Ishigaki Port before you cross — this is advice this page draws from the “no shops” guidance.

As the setting of the TV drama “Ruri no Shima” (2005), the island became known across Japan (Taketomi Town). Even so, what greets you when you step off the boat is, as ever, the quiet.

Confirmed information and sources for this page

This page is an independent, self-produced work. The island outline (the town's northern end; about 3.9 km around; about 50 residents; the smallest inhabited island of the Yaeyama Islands; on-foot movement) rests on Taketomi Town's island introduction and the Taketomi Town Tourism Association; the area of 0.96 km² on an Okinawa Prefecture remote-islands document. That the island is the birthplace of “Hatoma-bushi”, that the harvest festival falls in the sixth lunar month, that the regular ferry began in April 2006, and the word “setting” for the drama “Ruri no Shima” rest on Taketomi Town; Kamurama, Hatoma-Nakamori (33.8 m; a grove of kuba palms), the lookout platform, Yarahama, Mae-no-hama, the blue-coral community and the “no shops” guidance on the tourism association. Hatoma-Nakamori is a town-designated natural monument (designated in 1972) and a component of the national historic site “Sakishima Islands Hibanmuri” (designated 2007-03-23) (Taketomi Town; Agency for Cultural Affairs). The lighthouse dates from 1948 (tourism association). The national-park incorporation (announced 2012-03-27) and the “Hatoma Island Barasu / Unarizaki” marine park zone rest on the Ministry of the Environment. For the music festival the page relies on the record of the 28th edition (2025-05-04; organized by the festival committee) in Taketomi Town's event calendar, and does not treat the next edition or its date. Crossing times (direct about 45–55 min; via Uehara about 70–80 min; Uehara–Hatoma 10–15 min), the via-stop linkage by which the Hatoma route is cancelled together with the Uehara route, and the open-sea character of the route rest on Anei Kanko and Yaeyama Kanko Ferry. All of this was confirmed by 2026-11-01 (in part at summary level, via search-result titles and summaries). The day-trip time constraint, the resolve for an extra night, the advice on cash and provisions, and the scenery and ways-of-spending passages are editorial readings, not quotations. Always confirm sailings, sea conditions, events and facilities officially at the time of travel.
