YAEYAMA / YUBU ISLAND

Across a shallow sea,at a buffalo's pace.

Yubu is a small island of about 2 km around, lying off the east coast of Iriomote Island. The sea between is shallow — about 1 m deep even at high tide. That shallow water is crossed by water-buffalo cart or on foot. In the introductions of Taketomi Town and the tourism association, it is an island that is “a subtropical botanical garden in its entirety”.

A SHALLOW SEA FOR A ROAD

The shallowness of the sea
becomes the road.

Yubu Island belongs to Taketomi Town, Okinawa (Taketomi Town). It lies off the east coast of Iriomote Island, facing the Mihara district of Iriomote across the water. At 2.15 km around and 1.5 m above the sea, it is small enough to walk (Taketomi Town; Taketomi Town Tourism Association).

The sea between Yubu and Iriomote is shallow throughout — about 1 m deep even at high tide (Taketomi Town; tourism association). This page walks the faces of the island worth knowing before you cross: the time it takes to cross the shallows, how the island came to be what it is, the present that is introduced as “a subtropical botanical garden in its entirety”, and the way across via Iriomote.

01 / CROSSING THE SHALLOWS

About one meter,
even at high tide.

The sea between Iriomote and Yubu is shallow all the way across — about 1 m deep even at high tide (Taketomi Town; tourism association). The ways across are by water-buffalo cart or on foot (Yubu Island official). The cart takes about 10–15 minutes one way, and the tourism association's travel guide introduces Yubu as an island crossed to the sound of the sanshin. A pace that belongs to neither boat nor car — the walking pace of a buffalo — is this island's doorway.

02 / HOW THE ISLAND WAS REMADE

Once left behind,
replanted by hand.

Yubu once prospered with people who had moved from Taketomi and Kuroshima islands. Typhoon Elsie of 1969 (Showa 44) brought heavy damage, and most of the islanders moved to the Mihara district on Iriomote across the water. The late Seiji Iriomote — “Ojii” — and his wife stayed; with one water buffalo they carried soil and compost, kept planting palms and flowers, and with the support of those around them built a handmade paradise — today's Subtropical Botanical Garden Yubujima (Yubu Island official, “History of Yubu Island”). The water buffalo themselves first came to Ishigaki Island around 1932 (Showa 7), with settlers from Taiwan.

03 / THE ISLAND AS A GARDEN

The whole island,
a botanical garden.

The Taketomi Town Tourism Association introduces Yubu as an island that has become “a subtropical botanical garden in its entirety”. There are about 30 kinds of hibiscus, and more than 100 kinds of plants counting palms, flowering trees and fruit trees (tourism association). On the island are a bougainvillea garden, a butterfly house with the tree nymph (Idea leuconoe), one of Japan's largest butterflies, and “Manta Beach”, which looks straight out at Kohama Island — named because the sea between Yubu and Kohama is a passage for manta rays (Yubu Island official).

GETTING THERE

The way across
runs through Iriomote.

Yubu is reached by way of Iriomote Island. From Ishigaki Port, a high-speed boat runs to Ohara Port on Iriomote in about 35–50 minutes (the operators' guides differ). From Ohara Port, a local bus takes about 22–25 minutes to the Yubu buffalo-cart crossing (tourism association; Yubu Island official). For days when the Uehara route is suspended and journeys run via Ohara, see “Wind & typhoons” — Yubu sits well in an Ohara-side itinerary.

Fares and times for the buffalo cart, admission, buses and boats, and how to book, all change — so this page does not carry them. At the time of travel, always check the official guidance.

Confirmed information and sources for this page

This page is an independent, self-produced work, unaffiliated with Yubu Island or its facility. That Yubu belongs to Taketomi Town, its smallness (2.15 km around; 1.5 m above the sea), the shallow sea between it and Iriomote (about 1 m even at high tide), the introduction of the island as “a subtropical botanical garden in its entirety”, and the about 30 kinds of hibiscus with more than 100 kinds of plants in all rest on the introductions of Taketomi Town and the Taketomi Town Tourism Association. That the ways across are by water-buffalo cart or on foot, the cart's one-way time of about 10–15 minutes, how the island came to be (settlement from Taketomi and Kuroshima; Typhoon Elsie in 1969; the late Seiji Iriomote and his wife with one water buffalo; the buffalo's arrival on Ishigaki around 1932 with settlers from Taiwan), and the bougainvillea garden, butterfly house and Manta Beach rest on the Yubu Island official site and the tourism association. The introduction of crossing to the sound of the sanshin rests on the tourism association's travel guide. The local bus from Ohara Port (about 22–25 minutes) rests on the tourism association and the official site; the high-speed boat between Ishigaki and Ohara (about 35–50 minutes) on several operator-side guides, which differ. All of this was confirmed by 2026-11-01, in part at summary level via search-result titles and summaries. Scenery descriptions and passages on how to spend the time are editorial. Fares, opening hours, buffalo-cart, boat and bus times, and booking methods are deliberately not carried on this page — always confirm them officially at the time of travel.
